March 03, 2021, is a global observance of World Wildlife Day on the UN calendar. This year’s theme of World Wildlife Day is “Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet”, the objective is to highlight the role of forests, forest biodiversity, and ecosystems and sustain the livelihoods of millions of people globally, especially the indigenous communities.
The total forest area around the world is approximately 4.06 billion hectares, or approximately 5000 sq.m. (or 50 x 100m) per person, but forests are not equally distributed around the globe.
Forests are home to many lifeforms and indigenous/local communities, millions of people across the globe either residing adjacently or in the forest area are dependent on forests for their livelihoods, water supply, food, energy, etc. Roughly 28% of the world’s land surface is currently managed by indigenous peoples, including some of the most ecologically intact forests on the planet. These spaces are not only central to their economic and personal well-being but also their cultural identities. (Source)
This World Wildlife Day, we need to pledge to policies that promote sustainable forest-based agriculture, forest management, restoration, conservation of forests, wild flora and fauna, local communities that make up the entire ecosystem. In the face of the current climate change crisis, we need to achieve effective governance, integrated policies for conservation, awareness to build more resilient relationships with the forests and their ecosystems.
